In light of threats in Congress and great local relevance, local citizens will gather with Vicki Kaplan of Defenders of Wildlife for a slideshow and presentation. We'll discuss how and why to support a strong Endangered Species Act.Vicki's 12-minute slideshow highlights the successes of the Federal Endangered Species Act and local species and issues in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. We'll also talk about specific species in Eugene and critical local issues like the West Eugene Parkway, with general discussion on the issues and actions we can take.
For over 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has been a safety net for America’s wild plants and animals on the verge of extinction. Yet powerful special interests and their allies in Congress, including Oregon’s Rep. Greg Walden, are working to weaken the Endangered Species Act. The recovery of the American bald eagle was a signature accomplishment of the Endangered Species Act.In Oregon, the Endangered Species Act is vital to the recovery of the coho salmon - inextricably linked to the economy and identity of the Northwest - and many other species. Instead of working to repeal the Act, Congress should be finding new and better ways to help Americans preserve our natural heritage. If endangered plants and animals are abundant and their habitats protected, then so too are the places in which we hike, fish, ski, climb, ride, hunt and live. Endangered species conservation is an Oregonian value.
